“This river has the devil in it, rising from its bed like a neglected Fury” (Madame de Sévigné).

la durance_2Last major tributary of the left bank of the Rhone, the Durance rises in Montgenèvre near Briançon, 2,390 metres above sea level, and follows an irregular course of 324 km.

Regulated today by the Serre-Ponçon dam, the Durance transforms the landscape, sweeping away loose earth and driftwood and replacing it with beds of pebbles which gleam and reflect the sun.

To regulate the flow of the Durance, an industrial and agricultural canal of 85 km was created.
